Always inspired by those with a spirit of rebellion, we are loving the work of street artist Mark Jenkins this week at the Nana Judy office.

Based in Washington DC, Jenkins transforms the streets of cities into his stage by creating sculptural art that interacts with public areas. His projects most often involve the creation of sculptures moulded from packing tape and placed in busy areas, provoking reactions from amusement to horror. Jenkins wraps himself and other objects in hundreds of meters of clear tape to create his super realistic and slightly creepy sculptures, after which they find themselves out in the streets in a range of entertaining situations.

Our personal favourites are below, or see more at http://www.xmarkjenkinsx.com

It’s nearly that time of the year again….

….the time when hundreds of thousands of party goers from around the world descend on Óbudai-sziget (Old Buddha Island) in Budapest, Hungary for the week long Sziget Festival. Every year in the first week of August, the island in Budapest’s north is host to over 1000 cultural and musical acts, ranging from world music, folk, punk, and rock to electronic and mainstream pop acts. Established in 1993, the festival has grown from a relatively underground event to one of Europe’s most popular music festivals, attracting up to 400,000 people over the course of the week. The festival takes around 6000 staff to run, and desperate punters have been know to swim and raft across the surrounding waters in their quest for a free show. This years line-up , which is still being added to, includes a huge spectrum of international acts like Azealia Banks, Empire of the Sun, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Booka Shade , David Guetta, Boys Noize and many many more. We’re pretty jealous of anyone lucky enough to be going this year.

3D printing is an emerging manufacturing technology that allows almost any object to be created by printing successive layers of materials such as plaster, plastic and even chocolate into a 3D form. The technique has been applied to a wide range of purposes including experimental fashion, jewellery, food, medicine, and manufacturing. However, a Japanese business has found a more unusual use for the technology which is gaining popularity with Tokyo locals….

Clone Factory, in the inner Tokyo suburb of Akihabara, will create a creepily lifelike doll of you for around $1800. Standing 20 inches tall, the dolls’ head is a miniature replica of a customer’s, and comes complete with an outfit of your choosing. After creating a digital model of a customer’s head using a series of high-res cameras, the dolls head is 3D printed and attached to a body. The dolls are popular with Japanese women looking to commemorate special occasions such as weddings.

So for the egotistic out there, here is the perfect way to treat yourself…..

A 16m high sculpture of a rubber duck has been making headlines this week, for all the wrong reasons, after it mysteriously deflated in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour. The giant yellow PVC duck is part of a series of world record holding sculptures by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman that have been popping up around the world in locations such as Osaka, Sydney, Amsterdam and Sao Polo. The ducks are meant to spread a universal sense of joy and happiness wherever they anchor , and have been drawing huge crowds for a number of years. As some of the last people to see the Hong Kong duck before it was reduced to a “sad yellow disk” on Wednesday, the nANA jUDY office are sad to see it go.

As part of Times Square Arts (an ongoing large scale public art project where artists are given a chance to take over Times Square’s massive advertising boards every night at midnight for a month) renowned French artist JR has been covering the space with the faces of thousands of New Yorkers and tourists. In the exact spot that the world’s first photo booth stood around 100 years ago, JR has set up his Inside Out Project photo van, which allows anyone to have their photo taken and printed out as a stylised monochrome poster, and then pasted up in the square as part of a giant mural. At 11.57pm each night, the faces of participants are blown up to huge proportions on the giant advertising screens. Tonight will be the display’s final showing.

The 30 year old French artist has come to prominence in recent years with his practice of pasting massive photographs of faces on any surface he can access – church windows, buildings, and the sides of trucks to name a few. With his roots as a teenage graffiti artist, his oversized paste-ups are a large scale evolution of tagging. For the last 2 years he has been working on his globe spanning Inside Out project – which allows anyone to digitally upload their photograph and have it sent back to them as a black and white poster to display as they see fit.

As some of you may already know, nANA jUDY is based in Melbourne, a city whose diverse and unique character and culture is a constant source of inspiration. One of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks is Flinders Street Station, a building every Melbournian and visitor to the city has no doubt passed through countless times, and the busiest railway station in the southern hemisphere . Just days ago, the final stage of a competition with a one million dollar prize pool to re-design and re-invigorate the station precinct has commenced, with 6 architecture firms from across the world shortlisted to finalise their designs before the jury and public vote in July.

The heritage listed station, occupying two city blocks beside the Yarra river, was Australia’s first city railway station, opened in 1910. Behind the facade hide a number of interesting rooms that go unseen by the general public, including a library, office space and a once grand ballroom – now all in sad states of disrepair and disuse. One of the focuses of the competition is to make these historic areas once again accessible to the general public – a very cool prospect.

We will be watching with interest as the finalist’s designs are revealed in the coming months and voting begins on this exciting project that has the potential to change the face of our city.

Last Friday some of the nANA jUDY team caught up with RüFüS at their LIVE Melbourne show, and the guys at RüFüS were wearing the brand. Hailing from Byron Bay, RüFüS have fast been making a name for themselves on the local and international music scene with a string of sold out performances and features on trend setting overseas record labels such as KITSUNÉ (France) and PLANT (US), as well as supporting established artists such as Röyksopp , Yuksek, and the Aston Shuffle. With a number of successful EPs already under their belt, RüFüS are poised to release their debut album in mid 2013, and are currently touring Australia.

It’s been almost 6 years since French House royalty Daft Punk graced Australian shores with their ubiquitous (and sadly now retired) Pyramid and signature robot suits. Today music fans the world over are waiting with anticipation to get their first real taste of the band’s first studio album since 2007′s ” Alive”. Daft Punk have been steadily building up hype surrounding their latest album with a series of teaser videos during Saturday Night Live airings and most recently at Coachella festival, which will today come to fruition with the official release of the first single “Get Lucky”. The internet and media have been abuzz with news of the album and fan made fake “leaked” tracks, and the usually mysterious duo and their collaborators on the album (including Pharrell and Nile Rodgers) have given a number of interviews regarding the new material. Australian fans have a particularly good reason to be excited, as the band have announced they will be launching the album from the rural NSW town of Wee Waa, at the 79th annual Wee Waa Show on the 17th of May. Keep your ears out, ”Get Lucky” is dropping in just under an hour….

On Friday night nANA jUDY celebrated the end of fashion week in Sydney with a VIP jungle themed party at Red Bull HQ’s Half Moon Bar. Guests were treated to an exclusive preview of the new Spring-Summer collection, as well as having the opportunity to get up close and personal with live pythons , parrots, and alligators. Hundreds of lush vines, exotic jungle plants and flaming torches transformed the Half Moon Bar into a wild and lavish setting, complete with an intimate live show by Sydney rockers Van Hoorn (fronted by the gorgeous Cheyenne Tozzi).

Yayoi Kusama, now in her mid 80s, has been producing bizarre, beautiful and inspiring art since the late 1940s. Born and raised in Japan, she quickly tired of the Japanese scene and began exhibiting alongside the likes of Andy Warhol during the 60s and early 70s. Best known for her obsession with polkadots, Kusama has a diverse body of work across a range of mediums including painting, sculpture, installation, performance and large scale outdoor works, as well as having collaborated numerous times to create works of fashion, furnishings, cosmetics, interior design and print. Despite her unusual style and often confronting themes, she holds the record for the best selling living female artist, and is a well respected figure in the art world. Kusama currently resides in a mental hospital in Tokyo, and in 2013 will be embarking on a highly anticipated world tour.
